China Town

Welcome to the page by Singaporehongkong.com that tells you about the colorful Chinatown in Singapore. Singapore’s Chinatown is the traditional Chinese quarters of town. This place is a cultural neighborhood that features distinctly Chinese ethnic elements and a historically centralized ethnic Chinese population. Chinatown is also known as Niu Che Shui in Chinese and Kreta Ayer in Malay, where both he names imply “bullock cart water” referring to the carts that were used to bring in drinking water. Keep scrolling to know more about this beautiful place in Singapore.

The location of China Town is within the larger district of Outram. Since the largest ethnic group in Singapore is Chinese, Chinatown is considerably less than an enclave than it was once. The heritage sites in Chinatown have made it a place for tons of tourists to visit every year. The area between Pagoda Street and Smith Street has been considerably developed for tourists. Tanjong Pagar is the unofficial home of Singapore's gay community where several beachside resorts are made, whereas Club Street serves more to the young and yuppie crowd dotted with small, cozy eateries offering fantabulous delicacies to treat the tastebuds.

Chinatown’s ancient charms of historical and cultural significance are retained even today with much care. Large sections of the place have been declared as national heritage sites, officially designated for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. There are several sub-districts in Chinatown, like the Kreta Ayer, Bukit Pasoh (various Chinese cultural and clan associations are found here), Tanjong Pagar (pre-World War II shop houses are here), and Telok Ayer (home to several Chinese temples and Muslim mosques). There are also the Chinatown Food Street, Chinatown Night Market and Chinatown Heritage Center that are mostly maintained today for tourism and heritage purposes.
