The origin of Singapore’s name has been derived from the two Malay word “singa” meaning lion and “pura” meaning city. But these Malay words actually came from the two Sanskrit words of simha and pura. Thus Singapore means the City of Lions. According to the Malay Annals, Singapore got its name by a 14th Century Sumatran Malay prince named Sang Nila Utama. He on alighting the island after a thunderstorm, spotted a beast identified as a lion and thus renamed the place as Singapore. This was how Singapore got its present name.
