Festivals Celebrated in Singapore

The rich blend of cultures in Singapore implies that there’s always a cultural event for the people to celebrate throughout the year. The festivals celebrated in Singapore are mostly colorful events that remains centered on religion, ancient myths and traditions. The ethnic temples and quarters of Little India, Chinatown and Geylang, the shopping malls town centers and even the suburbs get drenched in the happy and colorful atmosphere during the festivals in Singapore.
There are numerous festivals celebrated in Singapore throughout the year. Every ethnic group or community in Singapore fetes their own festivals coupled with their religious beliefs with lot of enthusiasm and merriment. The major Singapore festivals are stated below:

Hari Raya Puasa is a Muslim festival in Singapore held on January 19 that signals the end of Ramadan with three days of celebration in the months of January or February. During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, vendor stalls are set to sell fruits and other foods in the Arab Street district just after the sunset.



Thaipusam is an auspicious Hindu festival in Singapore which is all about the survival, resilience, determination, persistence, affliction and sacrifice. Celebrated in the month of October, Thaipusam is the day when the Goddess Paarvati asked her son Murugan to wipe out the demons. The devotees in Singapore begin the day by observing dietary retractions, prayers and meditation. Men pierce their bodies with barbs and metal clips for holding kavadis beautified with peacock feathers and filled with offerings. Children and women carry potfuls of symbolic milk.

Vesak Day or Buddha day is an important Buddhist festival in Singapore celebrated by the Theravada Buddhists. On the full moon day of the Lunar month of Vesakh that falls on 30th April in Singapore, the Vesak Day festival is celebrated. Sutras are chanted by the monks and devotees go to Buddhist Temples where ritual of releasing of small animals or confined birds are held.

Lantern Festival is twice celebrated in a year in Singapore. The celebration includes making and lighting of magnificent lanterns, preparing delicacies, folk dances and fireworks.
